Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)

is a colorless sugar derivative used as the main active ingredient in self-tanning products. It reacts with the amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin, producing a brownish color.

Properties: DHA chemically reacts with the proteins and amino acids in the dead skin cells of the epidermis. This process, known as the Maillard reaction, results in temporary skin tanning without sun exposure.

Usage: Dihydroxyacetone is used in self-tanners such as creams, sprays, gels, and lotions. The tan usually appears within a few hours of application and lasts for several days, as the tinted skin cells are gradually shed.
