Broadband filters

 

are special UV filters in sunscreens that are effective against both long-wave UVA and short-wave UVB rays. They offer comprehensive protection against the harmful effects of sunlight on the skin.

By the way: UV stands for “ultraviolet” and refers to the light frequency beyond (Latin: ultra) violet light. This means that UV radiation lies in an invisible spectrum, since the human eye can only perceive colors up to violet, which corresponds to the shortest wavelength still detectable by the human eye.

 

 

UVA and UVB Radiation

1. UVA radiation (320–400 nm):

    • Properties: UVA rays have a longer wavelength and penetrate deeper into the skin than UVB rays. They account for about 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface.
    • Effects on the skin: UVA radiation is primarily responsible for skin aging (photoaging) and the formation of wrinkles, as it damages the collagen and elastin in the skin. It can also lead to long-term skin damage and skin cancer, as it generates free radicals that can damage the DNA of skin cells.

2. UVB radiation (280–320 nm):

    • Properties: UVB rays have a shorter wavelength and do not penetrate the skin as deeply as UVA rays. They account for about 5% of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface.
    • Effect on the skin: UVB radiation is the main cause of sunburn and plays a significant role in the development of skin cancer. It damages the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) and can cause acute skin reactions such as redness and a burning sensation.

 

 

Combination of Filters

Many modern sunscreens combine chemical and physical filters to provide optimal protection. This combination leverages the advantages of both filter types and minimizes their respective disadvantages. Such a hybrid approach ensures broad coverage of the UV spectrum and improves the product’s cosmetic appeal.

The effectiveness of sunscreens with broad-spectrum filters is indicated by the labels SPF (Sun Protection Factor) or LSF (Light Protection Factor).
